Moutarde Decor

If you flip through the pages of Canadian design magazines* on a semi-regular basis, chances are you've laid your eyes on some item, or even an entire interior, from Moutarde Decor. The beautiful shop, nestled into Outremont's quaint Bernard St., is the retail extension of Moutarde Design, a firm led by Rollande Vachon and her talented design team.

*House and Home, Style at Home, and Decor Mag included...

Featuring classic furniture, beautiful lighting, mirrors, frames, small items, as well as as linens and bathroom accessories, Moutarde decor is my favourite place to shop on Bernard. For a perfect Sunday I recommend brunch at one of the many cafes across the street (Cafe Souvenir or Les Enfants Terribles), and then a long browse through Moutarde before grabbing fresh bread at Première Moisson, cheese at Yannick fromagerie, and an ice cream at the famed Montreal crèmerie, Bilboquet.

My mother's saying that "classic design has already stood the test of time," is the first quote the comes to mind when I walk into this store. In fact, I could envision my grandmother, my mother and myself all wanting to re-fit our homes with the thoroughly desirable pieces the fill Moutarde decor's sublevel space. The range here, which has a strong European (particularly French) influence, is also clean and soft, appealing equally to a modern yet romantic aesthetic. I can't help but love how the french architectural prints and mirrors, framed beautifully, contrast the fluffy pillows and unique decor objects featured throughout.

Le Baldaquin

It is my opinion that behind every fabulous woman, there is an equally fabulous bed. Thus, you can only imagine my delight when stumbling across Le Baldaquin a few years back. The beautiful, airy, 1300-square-foot store, located on rue de la Commune in Old Montreal, is undeniably the best place in Montreal for sourcing luxurious linens, pillows, throws, and towels, as well as fine decorative accent pieces for your home and bath.

Opened in 2005 by Colette Dolman, the store carries notable labels like Sferra, SDH, and Abyss, and achieves the perfect mix with more modern textile lines like Dwell Studio, Missoni Home and Matouk.

What I love about the mentality at Le Baldaquin is that, regardless of your style preferences or budget, you know Colette and her team will make putting together your perfect bed a perfectly enjoyable process. They love to work with and educate their clients about how to achieve proper fit and proportion, and encourage repeat visits. Have something uber specific in mind and want to recreate it exactly how you imagine, to the very last fiber? They can help find what you're looking for, and are happy to order it in. In addition, they can ship right to your doorstep, which can work wonderfully if you're just visiting Montreal and don't want to deal with the stress of excess luggage en route home.

In addition to their extensive selection of bedding and linens, the store also carries a plethora of great gifts and beautiful items to accent your home decor. Make sure to check out the stunning home and table accessories by Georg Jensen and Michael Aram, and fabulous resin and brass pieces by Vancouver artist Martha Sturdy; purchases from any one of these artists are sure to make an everlasting statement.

Also, keep Le Baldequin in mind when shopping for the baby. I fell in love with the Velour Baby Bathrobes Colette showed me (available in blue, yellow and pink) and picked one up as the perfect gift for a close friend's baby's 1st birthday.

I also adored these textural, Matisse-esque pillows by looloo, one of the young, fresh (and eco-friendly!) companies showcased at the store. "We try to encourage new, young designers" says Dolman "we love to try to help them get off the ground."
